This year for my final studio practice I would like to explore the relationship between siblings illustrated through combined portraits.

Initially I would like to take photographs for the purposes of source material. Ideally taken within the photo studios at Duncan of Jordanstone to get optimal quality images.

These will then be taken into paint on canvas or board.

The preliminary idea is that the positioning of the figures will be telling of their relationship with each other. I would if possible like to use twins for the subject of this work. Identical or otherwise.

If you are, or know, twins who would be willing to sit for a number of photographs. Please could you get in touch with me via stephaniedrake@hotmail.co.uk. Or if you are at DoJ you can find me in studio 605.

With the return being that their image would be lovingly rendered in paint for my degree show piece.

It would be favourable if the subjects were within a reasonable distance to Dundee in order that they could attend a studio shoot for photographs. But I can be flexable with days and times of the photographs. The studio is open evenings and Saturdays as well as the working week.
I have no preference to age but ideally over the age of being able to converse in order to ascertain some information about their relationship with each other.

Love is like the Tour De France

To conclude a third year and to look onwards to the future I feel it can be summarised much the way that it started. That is with the statement

“Love is like the Tour de France”

Life seams to play itself out on much the same lines as the bike race.

There are the hero’s & the cheats:

(Eddy Merckx- 5 times Winner-regularly dubbed’ greatest and most successful cyclist of all time’ racing against the much less known Jacques Anquetil- 5 times winner - pragmatic drug-taker. Criticised for the practice he would respond respond: "What? You think I win my races on sugar alone?")

The climb to the top is hard, but any mistake you make on fast decent back down can cost you everything.

(Tommy Simpson the most successful English cyclist of the post-war years. Who died of exhaustion on the slopes of Mont Ventoux during the 13th stage of the Tour De France in 1967)

Although there can always be small victories on the way, sometimes in moments of heart felt passion you act regrettably

The elements you rely on the most in your race can sometimes let you down leaving you feeling defeated.

(David Millar's chance of winning the fifth stage of the Giro d'Italia was dashed when his chain snapped as he was poised to attack his four breakaway companions with little more than a kilometre to go. YouTube to see him throwing his bike and instead finishing 119th)

You can not win a race on your own, it takes a team of people to get you there, and when you do although the victory is yours it is them you turn to thank.

There are supporters who will cheer you on no matter where you are in the race

You must remember to look up occasionally and take pride in how far you have climbed

Sometimes you are ahead and sometimes you are behind but the thing to remember is that the race is long but ultimately it is only against yourself.

Boucherie

My project this year is titled ‘Boucherie’ and is based on a collection of photographs taken in France of a butchers shop. I spent three months of the summer living in a small village at the foot of the Alps working in a Chalet. For a section of my stay I lived with the local butchers family, which was a interesting experience. The family themselves, the Clarets, owned most of the land in the area which they used to farm cattle. They were also responsible for the butcher and sale of the meat in their butchers shop based in the centre of the village. It was a family run business and all members of the family lived in the same house on the farm. The aesthetic of the family, their home, and the butchers shop was what I found to be so interesting.

The set up was almost theatrical with: The women were skeletal thin with wispy hair, the men broad and stocky, their home furnished in every hue of brown, and the butchers shop laden with stuffed animals and hanging meat. The handles of the knives had worn the shape of the butcher’s hand, and the chopping boards indented from use. During the opening hours a scruffy dog from the village would sit outside the doors waiting for a scrap of meat or bone to the thrown away.

When you entered the shop the bell would ring above the door and out from the back room would rush a member of the family, often wearing a blood stained overall or brandishing a knife. In total contrast to their menacing attire would chip “Bonjour Madame!”

Using a collection of photographs I took as well as the experience I had of living with this family I wanted to produce a body of work that would capture the butchers’ character.

The portraits are hung by meat hooks alongside knitted Sausages, a meat cut screen print, and a faux deer mount on a backdrop of hand printed wallpaper.

For the past few days I have been screen printing my own wall paper, which is going up be pasted up in my studio space to form part of an installation for my Boucharie project.

The idea behind this is to hang the portraits I am painting of the butchers within an installation space the looks like the butchers shop where they are from to give a wider context to the images. The paintings will be suspended with hooks similar to that you would see meat hung.

I have been getting to know my sewing machine quite well recently. A small group of us are holding a stall on the Petite Noel market (info to come soon). So I have been busy making lots of things to sell, so far I have sewn over 100 pieces of bunting, and have plenty more crafts in the pipeline including wool/cashmere/tweed handbags, coin purses and badges.

The bunting is hand sewn with quality vintage materials either floral pattern or tweed, hung on pretty satin ribbon, they brighten up any room to make every day look like a celebration.

Trying Tiles

As mentioned in a previous post I have tried to run before I can walk in terms of my current painting. I rushed into it getting carried away with the characters in the piece instead of first tackling the background. So conversely this week I have been trying to work on the setting of the characters which is heavily laden with intricate tiles.

I have tried to make a stencil for this process, first out of card and then later with acetate. I hope to develop this onto canvas during this week.

I have made a number of mistakes however I have noted them for future work. I may have rushed into this painting as I was eager to get a paintbrush back in my hand, and in doing so not fully thinking out the order in which to paint the figures, object and background.

Each year my studio/desk space becomes cram packed with photos, postcards, magazine cut-outs, and anything else of interest that can be pinned up. I think it is important to have these, not necessarily to inspire or influence my work. Just purely as a means of distraction for myself- they often remind me who I am or where I have been.

At the end of last semester there was not an inch of cork board in sight. I cleared it all away and have started afresh, however some items remain.

Postcard of ‘Nicola with Octopus’ a painting by Joel Ely. This postcard has been on my notice board for many years. I saw the painting at the BP portrait award in 2005 and it utterly inspired me. It is a beautiful piece of work. And it reminds me there is some sense in the art world when you push aside the contemporary pursuit for naive imagery that saturates so much of what I see on a day to day basis.

A stone picked up from 3226m altitude, after a long walk in the French Alps rewarded by stunning views of mountain tops. I think this rock reminds me there is far more of the world than the part I live in. a small sense of perspective I suppose.

Various cycling memorabilia; a photograph, a letter, a cap and a small metal cyclist. There is a line in a film which states “love is like the tour de France” I adore this motto, all my life two wheels have never been far away. The line for me sums up so much of life beautifully simply. You have to work hard to seek reward, and you must grab an opportunity when it is there as it can pass in an instant.

There is also various 60’s imagery, notably the iconic model Jean Shrimpton. I love the styling and music of the 60’s. The liberation of women, the unbeatable motown and soul music, and the demure styling make the era somewhat idealised to me.

Like dandelion seeds they disperse from the mountain top
Dangling from their multicoloured canopy through the atmosphere they will drop.
Catching the thermals and swooping through the sky,
They silently, gracefully ebb, bob and fly.
I always thought as a child that a caught dandelion seed would grant a wish
I remember what I dreamed off then as I watch the gliders swish.
My dreams have changed a little since being a little girl,
But I still catch the seeds make my wish and let my hand unfurl.
No longer do I think of being invincible, my pet talking, or shooting into space, instead I close my eyes think of those I love and imagine their face.
I like to watch the paragliders on their journey though the hills,
A moment of contemplation looking up into the heavens and standing very still.
I look back down to where I am stood and think about the wishes I blew,
I will continue to chase my seeds with the hope that they come true.

My sunflowers were starting to get way too big for their boots, or well their pots. You could see the tins were cram packed with roots so I had to repot. This was not something I wanted to do and the aftermath proved my point.

I put fresh compost into three big terracotta pots in the garden, then carefully carried the sunflowers outside, removed the base of the tin with a can opener and pushed each plant delicately out into their new home. I then tied each plant to a bamboo stick for stability with embroidery thread. I placed the pots at the front of the house next to the wall hoping this would shelter them from the wind.

I came back to check on them a matter of hours later and my biggest plan had snapped in too, I was gutted.

I have since wrapped masking tape around the plant in the vein hope that I may somehow magically fix itself. I hope so.

Recently I keep on finding passport pictures of myself, I’m sure there are more at my parent’s house. I have chronologically ordered the photos; the most recent one was taken 2-3 years ago now. I find them quite fascinating, as a sort of regimented way of documenting identity through time.

I can recognise my outfits in each of the photographs and have clear memories of what I was like at that point in my life, where I was and what I was doing. It makes me wonder what the next series of photos will look like- present and future- where I will be and what I will be doing.

This weekend I went to see two lovely little lambs called Minty and Patches, I got to hand feed them which was great, and also got a bit of a cuddle. I’ve never touched a lamb before as they have always been far away in a field somewhere- but they are truly adorable they feel just like a nice warm jumper.

The lambs are both sadly being reared for the purpose of Christmas dinner. Minty being named as such as she will be surved with mint sauce.

The thought of the pair being put on a plate to eat for supper is beyond me therefore I plan to launch Operation Jumper; the plan will involve the capture and kidnap of the two little bleaters and for their safe release into the wild of my flat, where I will keep them like any other domestic pet, feed them wensleydale cheese and crackers and take them for walks. Finer details of Operation Jumper are yet to be finalised.

I have been away from my flat for a few weeks as I went to stay with my parents over Easter. I thought it would be slightly over the top to take my three Golden Syrup pots of sunflowers with me, so instead I excessively watered them and hoped for the best. When I returned back on Sunday night shortly after checking in the wardrobe and under the bed incase there were any murderers lurking in our absence I headed to the window sill. My heart sunk slightly as all my sunflowers bar one were drooped over the edges of the pots, looking like they had completely lost the lust for life. So I filled them back up with water, but thinking that this might be the end for them. I looked at them the next day somwhat apprehensively and they were straight upright again, yes! They live on.

(The cut off bit of toilet roll tube you can see was my slightly amateur way of trying to keep them upright. )

I am intending to spend this week organising my portfolio ready for assessment, however there is one small being who doesn’t usually share my workspace, Cat. She spent this afternoon systematically working round the floor having a nap on each piece of my work, each time I shouted “Oi! Off there” she moved onto the next one, until there were none left. You can probably see she had fallen out with me by the end of it for spoiling her fun.

It was our exhibition opening on Friday and all went well, there was a good turn out of around about 200 people. The show runs for two weeks so hopefully it sustains interest through that time. I think it’s fair to say all the exhibitors received positive feedback on their work, which is what it’s all about really.

This week I’ve been working on setting up an exhibition called “Show You’re Working”. I have two pieces in this exhibition, my ‘Flotsam and Jetsam’ assemblages, and my recent working piece ‘Old Bag, New Shoes’.

My piece ‘Old Bag, New Shoes’ came together as a little bit of a happy accident, but the piece sums up my experiences so far in Dundee; there are some things I carry on my shoulders every day unable to leave behind, however I hope my feet take me in the right direction and my sights are set forwards.

I’ve not finished this drawing yet, however I’ve decided maybe I could turn my recent procrastination into productivity and have a piece named ‘Old Bag New Shoes’. And combine my two drawings. Just an idea at the minute.
